Northbound Union Pacific transfer train. Mc Cook Junction. Mc Cook Illinois USA. May 2007.

A northbound Union Pacific Railroad transfer freight train, traveling north on the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, has just cleared the east / west - BNSF Railway crosstracks at Mc Cook Junction. The large gravel piles to the left, are on the property of The Vulcan Materials Company. I took this photo on a very lovely springtime morning in May of 2007. It was a lovely morning to be on location with a digital camera.

Eddie,

I've revisited this location several times since learning right here on your blog that it is open again. Surprisingly, I've never encountered another fan, despite its popularity years ago. Guess word hasn't gotten out enough yet about its re-opening.

Just last Sunday near 5 pm, I parked and stood at the exact spot you did for this photo. In the distance I saw a couple trains on the IHB, waiting. In about 15 minutes of no activity I understood why they were being held there. Three eastbounds on the BNSF went through, almost on each other's tails. Perhaps traffic was backing up because they weren't going fast at all. Then, a westbound, a super-long stack train under NS power. Then, a BNSF transfer swung off the northbound IHB onto the westbound BNSF via that connector track. The waiting trains on the IHB were then cut loose. Made for quite a busy spectacle in a fairly short amount of time.
