The Milwaukee Road, was one of several North American Railroads that were in a hurry to modernize their operations, and dieselize their locomotive fleet after World War 2 had ended in 1945. The Milwaukee Road operated their remaining steam locomotives in regular service until 1954.
These 4-6-2 passenger service steam locomotives, were used in Chicago area commuter train service during the final years of Milwaukee Road steam locomotive operations.
