Maui Sugar Cane Train

I found this video on You Tube this morning.

This video is very special to Me, as My Family and i went on a vacation to Hawaii, way back in August of 1979 when I was 17 years old.

I rode the Sugar Cane Train on the island of Maui with My Mother. The sugar cane train, is also known as the Lahina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad. This a 3 foot narrow guage tourist railroad that was started in the early 1970's. The two steam locomotives, "Anaka" shown here, and the "Myrtl" wich pulled My train, were rebuilt from ugly and utilitarian 0-4-0T narrow guage saddle tank steam locomotives from the Carbon Limestone Company of Pennsylvania.

These locomotives were originally rebuilt in to a 2-4-2 wheel arrangement, but the locomotive trailing truck wheels had proven themselves quiete troublesome, and were removed.

Locomotive "Anna" shown here, is cosmetically "Backdated" to look like an American locomotive from the 1800's era, while the other locomotive "Ananka"...is more modern with a steel cab, straight smokestack and a "Whaleback Tender", much like the kind utilized on the Southern Pacific narrow guage railroad in the state of California.

If You are planning on visiting Hawaii, it is an attraction woth visiting.

Thanks.
Eddie K.
