Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe steam locomotive # 2903 at original display location. The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. August 1984.

I took this photo back in August of 1984, while on a family outing to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. For many years, 2 steam locomotives and the captured U-505 German submarine from world war 2, were displayed in the museums backyard. This particulair steam locomotive, is the A,T & S, F 4-8-4 type locomotive # 2903. While on display at the museum of science and industry, the cab was open for inspection and the driving wheels rotated via rollers and electric motors. Looking quite weather beaten from Chicago's harsh winters and blistering summers, the locomotive was eventually moved in the mid 1990's to a new home at the Illinois Railway Museum located in Union Illinois USA. The other steam locomotive, New York Central Railroad 4-4-0 type locomotive # 999, was cosmetically restored and moved indoors. The U-505 submarine was also moved indoors in recent times to an underground display area.
