A rare photo of the Santa Fe / Illinois Northern branchline local at work. Chicago Illinois. 1986.
I took this photo sometime during 1986. From Monday thru Friday, The Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe operated this industrial branchline local. This line, approximately 6 miles long....operated between the A,T &,S,F Corwith Yard just south of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal -To the Burlington Northern Railroad interchange at South Western and Blue Island Avenues.
This line was originally known as the Illinois Northern Railroad. Today this line has one customer left. The lines owner BNSF Railway has filed to abandon this line. The former Burlington Northern line east of South Western Avenue, is today the privately owned Central Illinois Railroad.
