Night time at the Grand Trunk Western Elsdon depot on West 51st Street. ( Gone.) Chicago Illinois USA. April 1983., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
Hi everyone!
Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page, from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.
I took this now historic photo, way back in April of 1983.
The Grand Trunk Western Railroad Elsdon Yard on West 51st Street, between South St. Louis and South Lawndale Avenues...was in it's final months of operation.
Railroad business at the old steam era GTW Elsdon facility, was all business as usual, 24 -7 when I took this night time photo facing west on west 51st Street. The old 1888 built two story wooden Elsdon depot, had long since boarded and departed passenger train patrons. The depot was now a yard office , dispatching and crew change facility.
The GTW would close Elsdon Yard for good in October of 1983, and this old depot was demolished in November of that year.
Today, the former Elsdon depot sight is a vacant city lot along the southside of West 51st Street, in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood on the southwest side of Chicago.
