One railroad that I remember growing up in the city of Chicago Illinois during the 1960's and 70's era, was the former Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad.

The G,M & O was one of many North American railroads that were in a big hurry to dieselize their locomotive fleet after World War 2 had ended in 1945. With their classy two tone red and maroon , solid maroon early Alco diesel locomotives, the black and white EMD 1960's era roadswitchers, and the early 1970's era red and white EMD roadswitchers...the G,M & O was a colorful railroad.

On August 10th, 1972, the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio merged with the Illinois Central Railroad, and thus became the Illinois Central Gulf.

This 1970 G,M & O photo, was found at My Link page Fallen Flags.Org located to the right of Your computer screen.
