Seen here at an unknown location, possibly South Lakeshore Drive, is one of the General Motors 40 foot transit buses from the 1951 order wearing the original color scheme when placed in service.
One of these 1951 GM buses from the last Chicago Motor Coach Company bus order, can be seen or occasionally ridden on today at The Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois. www.irm.org
When the CTA eventually retired these buses from passenger service between 1970 and 1972, several went on to become maintenance work service buses in to the 1980's.
I rode these buses with My family growing up in Chicago during the 1960's and early 1970's. They had soft vinyl seats, individual incandescent interior lights and standee windows. I recall that the interiors were a two tone green color combination with a medium Teel green below the window line, and a light auga green above the windows and across the ceiling.
