Penn Central Baldwin diesel yard switcher. Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA. January 1st, 1973. From the internet.

I discovered this historic early 1970's era black and white photo, from the fallen flag Penn Central Railroad on the internet recently.

Seen here on what appears to be a dry but cold January 1st 1973 New Years Day in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, is an old 1950's era Baldwin Locomotive Works diesel yard switcher.

The Baldwin Locomotive Works, was headquartered in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and originally had manufactured steam locomotives begining during the 1800's. When America's railroads had began to dieselize during the 1940's and 1950's, Baldwin began marketing and manufacturing their own line of diesel electric locomotives.

Baldwin was not successful in the long run as a builder of diesel locomotives against rival companys EMD and ALCO, and had departed the locomotive business during the mid 1950's. Their plant at Eddystone New York had closed for good.

This locomotive may have been acquired from the New York Central or Pennsylvania Railroad during the 1968 Penn Central merger. It is seen here during it's final years in daily operations. All remaning Baldwin and ALCO locomotives would soon be phased out.
