The Illinois Railway Museum also has a collection of North American first and second generation diesel electric locomotives in their collection, standing side by side with electric streetcars and steam locomotives. It is a multi era collection showing the evolution of railroad equipment.

An old EMD SW-1 switcher from diesel's early days, is coupled to a recently restored General Electric model U-30C built in 1974.
