I found this classic 1970's era railroad photograph on the internet recently.
The Penn Central Railroad existed from 1968 until 1976. This railroad was created from the 1968 merger of the New York Central, and the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968. In 1969, The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad joined the Penn Central Railroad.
All three railroads were facing hard financial times during the 1960's, and had decided to merge to ease things up. By 1970, the Penn Central Railroad had filed for Bankruptcy.
The Penn Central lived on borrowed time and borrowed funds, until the United States Govorment on the late U.S President Gerald R. Ford created Conrail in April of 1976.
Conrail was created by the govorment financial bailout, of six bankrupt northeastern United States railroads. Conrail existed from 1976, until 1999 when the Norfolk Southern and CSX railroads bought it out and divided the railroad between the two carriers through merger as well.
This photo from Penn Central days, was proboubly taken during the early to mid 1970's. The interner site did not give a location on this photo. This is a timeless and very classic image of behind the scenes railroad M.O.W (maintenance Of Way) operations.
