For many years, General Electric was involved in the railroad motive power and suply industry by manufacturing electric locomotives, electric motors for locomotive trucks, and even their own line of small 25 to 80 ton line of sma;; industrial and shortline diesel locomotives. Many of these, were of the unique center cab variety found on shortline railroads, and factories requiring an in plant switcher.
During the early 1960's, G.E decided to enter the large high horsepower mainline diesel electric locomotive market, of wich they are doing fine today.
One of their early standardized mainline road diesel locomotives, was the G.E U 25B. The former Milwaukee Road was a large user of this type of locomotive, and had owned several.
