The Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon Yard locomotive terminal. ( Gone.) Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983.

The Grand Trunk Western RR Elsdon Yard engine terminal. Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983.

This now rare Chicago railfan photo, dates back to My early days as a local Chicago railfan photographer back in the year of 1983.

We are looking southeast from the GTW Elsdon Yard railroad embankment just south of West 48th Place, and just a few blocks west of South Kedzie Avenue. Rumors were circulating amongst the local Chicago southside railfan community, that the GTW was going to be closing Elsdon Yard very soon. Unfortunately....The rumors were true.
I just happen to be lucky one sunny afternoon in October of 1983, when I visited the Elsdon Yard and locomotive roundhouse during it's last week of any operation. Sitting here on the locomotive ready tracks just west of the 1914 built steam era roundhouse, are several GTW EMD roadswitchers idling in the Indian Summer sunshine.

One week later, this facility would be abandoned and resemble a ghost town.
I am so glad I photographed this image when I had the chance before it was
much too late.
