Pennsylvania Railroad T1 Duplex steam locomotive on a passenger train. Homewood Illinois circa 1940's.

I found this really rare 1940's era vintage black and white Chicago area railroad photo, on My liks page for Fallen Flag.Org to the right of Your computer screen.

A very unique late steam era mainline steam locomotive, was the Pennsylvania Railroad's own homemade T1 class Duplex 4-4-4-4 steam locmotive. These locmotives originally pulled passenger train assignments when introduced during the mid 1940's, but eventually many wound up hauling freight trains as well.

With their unusual streamlined shrouding, shark noses, Poppet valves , rigid non articulating frames and tall driving wheels...these locomotives were very fast and powerful. Unfortunately...they frequently suffered from lack of adhesion causing the drivers to slip. The rigid locmotive drive wheel frames, required wide radious curves. They operated in regular service until approximately 1957, but unfortunately none were preserved.

MTH, Broadway Limited Models and Bowser MFG, have working models in H.O Scale.
