Hawthorne Junction. Chicago Illinois USA. June 2007.

I took this photo after work one day, back in June of 2007. Seen here near the Chicago city limits, is the Belt Railway of Chicago's Hawthorne Junction. Prior to 1990, an old wooden interlocking tower stood at the spot where the steel shed cabinet is seen behind the fence. This view is looking south. In the distance can be seen a southbound Canadian National freight train on the interchange connecting to the north/ south-Belt Railway of Chicago trunk line. The track in the foreground, is the Canadian National ex Illinois Central Iowa Division mainline. Hawthorne Junction is located approximately at West 33rd Street about 4 blocks west of South Kostner Avenue, approximately 5 blocks east of South Cicero Avenue at the city limits with west suburban Cicero Illinois. Most of the trains through here, are lenghty and slow moving transfer trains on the Belt Railway of Chicago trackage.
