Once upon a time in Chicago reanacted. Chicago Surface Lines car # 1374 and trolley conductor in rear doorway. The Illinois Railway Museum. June 1993.

I took this photo on a June 1993 visit to the Ilinois Railway Museum. In what looks like an everyday scene local Chicagoans took for granted decades ago, A museum volunteer streetcar conductor suddenly became a period photographic prop. Chicago Surface Lines car # 1374, was built in 1904 by the St. Louis Car Company, and worked for the Chicago Surface Lines in daily passenger streetcar operation untill approximately 1945. From 1945 untill the Succescor company CTA ended streetcar operations in June of 1958, car # 1374 finished out her career in Maintenance of Way / support operations.
While in CSL employment, passengers loaded through the rear doors attended to by the conductor, who then took the transit fares and signalled to the motorman to proceed.
