Santa Fe locomotives in the Kodachrome and Yellow Bonnet color schemes working the south hump at Corwith Yard. Chicago Illinois USA. April 1987.

I took this photo one Spring evening, way back in April of 1987. This view is looking east on South Archer Avenue toward the intersection of West 47th Street. A 4 unit set of Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe locomotives from General Electric and EMD, are seen backing down the south hump at the Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad's Corwith Yard in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood. The two lead units , are painted in the proposed red and yellow Kodachrome scheme, from a proposed, highly anticipated, and cancelled merger attempt with the Southern Pacific Railroad. Yes, both railroads actually began to repaint several diesel locomotives ahead of time. The Interstate Congress Commision ruled against the merger in 1986, and locomotives from both railroads rolled around in this unique color scheme for a number of years after the fact. Both railroads became fallen flags through large mergers with A,T& S,F and Burlington Northern in 1995, and Union Pacific acquiring the Southern Pacific around the same time. The concrete railings on this bridge were also jackhammered off during the summer of 1987. The sun was setting on another past era.

I wonder just how many times trucks have hit this viaduct? I know of at least three I personally witnessed. The top was torn off of one trailer like a can of sardines. Another time, a sea container flipped over on it's side after hitting the bridge. The third one I saw knocked the traffic lights off of the bridge. I now have one of the traffic lights - thanks to the guys working at the City Bureau of Electricity it even works.
