Foreward interior view of Chicago Transit Authority 1948 PCC electric streetcar # 4391. The Illinois Railway Museum. Union Illinois USA. August 2000.

I took this photo on an August 2000 visit to the Illinois Railway Museum located in Union Illinois.

Seen here is a view once experienced by CTA transit passengers who grew up in Chicago during the 1940's and 50's. This is an interior view of Chicago Transit Authority car # 4391 wich was built by the St. Louis Car Company in 1948.
This was one of Chicago's last electric streetcars built, and was in service untill the end of Chicago streetcar service on June 21st, 1958.

Pcc, or Presidents Conference Commitee designed cars like this, were used in Chicago on such streetcar routes as Route # 49 Western Avenue, Route # 20 Madison Street, Route #63 West 63rd Street, Route # 22 Clark Street, and the Route # 36 Broadway State. Car # 4391 is the only survivor from the later group of Chicago PCC cars, as the CTA was in the process of phasing out streetcar routes during the 1940's and 50's, and would soon upgrade their rapid transit system, with new cars in the 6000 series that utilized electrical components and trucks from scrapped Chicago PCC cars.
