I took this photo of a classic behind the scenes aspect of Chicago winter railroading, in January of 2008. It was a bitterly cold morning in January of 2008, with outside temperatures at around 10 degrees above zero Farenheight. We are at the Canadian National Railroad's former Illinois Centreal Crawford Yard on Chicago's near southwest side, at the city limits border near west suburban Cicero Illinois. The crew from a railroad industry firm known as Hulcher Rail Services, was found at the scene of a minor freight car derailment on a siding track at Hawthorne Yard.
Heavy equipment was required to rerail a freight car in bitter windchill conditions.
