HI: I HAVE BEEN READING EXCERPTS OF PEOPLE WHO LIVED NEAR THE CLYDE YARD IN CICERO, IL. MY MOM HAD A TAVERN ON THE CORNER OF LARRAMIE AND OGDEN AVES. FROM THE LATE 1930'S THROUGH APRIL 1955. THE STATE BOUGHT OUR TAVERN IN ORDER TO BUILD THE NEW "CICERO CENTENIAL BRIDGE" WHICH WAS COMPLETED IN 1956. I WAS A TODLER WHEN I USED TO SIT ON THE LARGE HOT WATER RADIATOR AND PEER OUT THE FRONT WINDOW OF THE TAVERN AND WATCH THE STEAM ENGINES WORK THAT YARD. I SAW IT ALL FROM THE MIKES TO THE EARLY BLACK AND GRAYS TO THE RED AND WHITES. IN THE WINTER THE STEAM ENGINES WOULD PUSH LARGE SPECIALLY MADE FLATCARS THAT WERE EQUIPED WITH KEROSENE TORCHES TO MELT THE ICE ON THE MANY SWITCHES IN THE YARD. IN THE FREEZING COLD OF IL. WINTERS THE SKY WOULD LIGHT UP IN A GOLDEN GLOW TO WARM UP THOSE FROZEN SWITCHES. SEVERAL TIMES THROUGH THE YEARS THE EXHAUST FROM THE STEAM LOCO'S WOULD CATCH THE OLD WOOD PLANK FLOORS ON FIRE WHICH ALSO HAPPENED IN THE COLD WINTERS. FIREMAN HAD ONE HECK OF A TIME TO PUT THOSE FIRES OUT SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BRIDGE SPAN. I STILLM HAVE PICTURES OF THAT AREA. GEORGE
