The Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon Yard locomotive terminal. Chicago Illinois USA. 1962.
I spoted this "Rare" photograph recently on the internet at a site called www.fallenflags.org
I was born in Chicago during the year of 1962.
A special place I had come to know and love for railfanning activity on the southwest side of Chicago, was the Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon Yard.
This rare vintage color photo, was taken facing east toward the 1914 built GTW Elsdon roundhouse at approximately West 49th Street and South Kedzie Avenue.
The GTW closed Elsdon Yard in October of 1983, and the facilities here sat abandoned and forelorn until late 1987, when the roundhouse and servicing area was finally demolished.
Today this is the site of small retail stripmall in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.
