Grand Trunk Western Railroad 4-8-4 steam locomotive # 6322 at the GTW Elsdon Yard. Chicago Illinois. May 1959.

Most of the photos that are shown here at Eddie's Railfan Page, are My own.

I found this rare gem on the internet recently, and I thought that You may enjoy seeing this one.

One of My all time favorite railfan photo locations on the southwest side of Chicago, was the Grand Trunk Western Elsdon Yard and their 1914 built steam era railroad roundhouse that was located at approximately West 49th Street on South Kedzie Avenue, in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.

I discovered and fell in love with Elsdon while I attended nearby Curie High School from 1977 to 1981, and sadly lamented it's loss when the GTW closed Elsdon in October of 1983.

Seen here during happier times in May of 1959, is GTW steam locomotive # 6322 at the Elsdon locomotive terminal, just west of the roundhouse. The GTW was a subsidiary of the Canadian National Railroad. Just like the parent company did in Canada...the Grand Trunk Western operated steam locomotives in regular service longer than most North American railroads. While most railroads had completely dieselized during the 1940's and 50's, the GTW operated steam until 1961.
