A small Holder snowplow tractor. Glenview Illinois. January 2010.

I took this photo yesterday morning during My lunch break.

The greater Chicagoland area has been experiencing heavy lake effect snowstorms this last week or so, and the village of north suburban Glenview Illinois is using every piece of equipment available to them.

Seen here in the municipal parking lot across the street from the Metra / Amtrak train station on Lehigh Avenue, is a small orange Holder snowplow tractor from the Glenview Department Of Public Works.

Those big dump trucks with the attatched snowplow blades can't go everywhere, so this little tractor with an enclosed cab is the ideal tool for places like parking lots, walking pathways in city parks, sidewalks and bicycle trails.

When I attended Curie High School in Chicago from 1977 to 1981, the schools custodial staff had a simular tractor like this one that was painted red with an enclosed cab to keep the schools sidewalks clear.

During Chicago's infamous Blizzard of 1979, that little red tractor got a real work out on the schools front grounds.
