Preserved 1908 built Chicago Surface Lines electric streetcar # 144. The Illinois Railway Museum. Union Illinois USA. August 2006.
I took this photo on a somewhat overcast August 2006 visit to the Illinois Railway Museum in the town of Union Illinois. In the days before buses were either invented, or in very widespread use....People traveled aboard electric streetcars on Chicago's many main streets, avenues, boulevards and thoroughfares. Chicago Surface Lines car # 144 was built by the Pulman Standard Car Company of Chicago in the year of 1908, and operated in regular transit service until 1954. It was kept on the Chicago Transit Authority roster for charters and special occasions until the end of all Chicago streetcar operations in June of 1958. Today it is loveingly restored and operating for visiting museum patrons at the Illinois Railway Museum.
