Chicago's historic Brighton Junction. (Gone.) Chicago Illinois USA. April 2007.
I took this photo on location in early April of 2007. We are on top of the railroad embankment just west of the intersection of South Archer and western Avenues. Seen here during it's very last Springtime of operation, is the manually operated and quiete delightfully outdated Brighton Junction. This was one of those places were modern double stack intermodal container trains, met old steam era train signaling facilities decades after the fact. Big changes were on the drawing board in the immediate upcoming months.
Brighton Junction was phased out upon construction of new signals and satelite communications by the Canadian National ex Illinois Central Railroad. Brighton Junction as a manually operated train dispatching and signaling facility operated from this tiny shack, officially closed on July 3rd, 2007. The shack and semaphore signals were to be destined for museum preservation.
