Pennsylvania Railroad G-5 Class 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler type steam locomotive # 5704 working the Manhattan Transfer. March 1935.

Although I was born too late to witness the steam era firsthand, I have seen several American steam locomotives from the era in historic photographs, miniature model trains, and preserved examples in railroad museums and city park displays.

One of My all time favorites, is the Pennsylvania Railroad G-5 class 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler steam locomotive. These locomotives were dual service machines used on both local switching way freights, transfer trains and passenger trains. The Pennsylvania Railroad's subsidiary railroad known as the Long Island Railroad, used these on commuter trains until 1955.

Luckilly, three have been preserved. One from the Pennsylvania Railroad is on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg Pennsylvania. I have seen this one up close during My August 1990 vacation to Strasburg Pennsylvania. The other two were from the Long Island Railroad, and were preserved in Long Island New York. One was reported to be undergoing a lenghty mechanical overhaul at Riverhead New York, but was later relocated to the Strasburg Railroad shop in Strasburg Pennsylvania.

Bowser makes a nice model of this in H.o scale as well.
