Conrail switching local. Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
I took this now historic southwest side Chicago photo, back in October of 1983.
Time was running out for the light railed spur sidings , in the industrial district along West 48th Place just west of South Kedzie Avenue in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.
I was in the right place at the right time, when the Conrail switching local arrived to serve the factory spur sidings with rail shipments and empty cars alike.
In a few years, this light railed industrial branchline with very sharp curves, would be abandoned and the rails removed.
This view was taken facing northwest, from the north embankment of the already empty and soon abandoned Grand Trunk Western Railroad Elsdon Yard.
