The Grand Trunk Western Elsdon Yard locomotive terminal. Chicago Illinois. 1977., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
I found this classic 1970's era Chicago railroad photo from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad at My Link page Fallen Flags.Org, located to the right of Your computer screen at www.rr-fallenflags.org
This photo was taken at the Grand Trunk Western Railroad's long gone Elsdon Yard locomotive terminal at approximately West 49th Street just west of South Kedzie Avenue, in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.
This wonderful and quaint old steam era train yard and 1914 built roundhouse, are all too familiar to Me. I attended nearby Curie High School from 1977 to 1981, and could recall hanging out here many times either after school, or in the morning if I arrived to school too early occasionally.
This facility was closed by the GTW in October of 1983, and the prperty is slowly being redeveloped for commercial and residential uses today.
