Chicago streetcars have always had a cult following of their own here in the windy city, especially amongst the lucky people who had the pleasure of riding these in daily transit operation prior to 1958.
I spotted this photograph a My Link Page Dave's Electric Railroads, located to the right of Your computer screen at http://www.davesrailpix.com/
Seen here in what appears to be an early 1950's era photograph taken in the bright early morning sunshine, is the Chicago Transit Authority's Lawndale Carhouse facility, located along the south side of South Ogden Avenue, near the intersection of West Cermak Road in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhod on the west side of the city.
Prior to the end of streetcar service on the CTA Rt # 60 / Blue Island line in May of 1952, these standard double ended red streetcars from the 1920's era, were based out of the Lawndale carhouse from 1948 until 1952, after the closing of the Leavitt treet carhouse in 1948.. This carbarn also housed streetcars that were assigned to the Ogden Avenue line, and the Rt # 23 Cermak Road line.
After the CTA Rt # 23 Cermak Road line was converted to transit bus operation in May of 1954, the Lawndale Carhouse would soon become a 100 % transit bus garage facility.
The Lawndale Carhouse was eventually demolished during the 1980's, after speding it's last years as a Chicago Transit Auhority storage facility.
Thanks.
