Saint Richard's Catholic Church Parish annual summer carnival. Chicago Illinois. July 1987.

One of My favorite Summertime memories growing up in the city of Chicago Illinois, were the once numerous neighborhood sumer carnivals that were held at some of the local neighborhood Catholic church parishes.

During the 1980's and early 1990's, My personal favorite was the one held every July, at the Saint Richard's Catholic Parish at West 50th Street and South Kostner Avenue in Chicago's Garfield Ridge neighborhood near Midway Airport.

I took this photograph at their 1987 event.

Facing west from the carnival midway, We see that it is now twilight time, and the lights on the Ferris Wheel and other rides have been turned on for the evening session.

Saint Richard's always had a wonderful carnival that featured food that was catered from the nearby Red barrel Restaurant on South Archer Avenue, Live entertainment, Games of chance, and a really nice carnival midway in their west parking lot.

After the 2007 event at Saint Richard's Parish, the annual carnival was discontinued due to a lack of money, a lack of volunteers, and the ever so hard to find "Sincere" amusement company with carnival rides and concessions.

The Saint Richard's Carnival, has since been replaced by the annual Labor Day "Taste of Garfield Ridge" festival on the church property.

I am so glad that I tok as many photographs of their carnival when I did back in the 1980's.

Thanks.
Eddie K.
