The Chicago Transit Authority's pedestrian crossing guards. Skokie Illinois USA. August 2008.
I took this photo on the Chicago transit Authority's Yellow Line / Skokie Swift railroad crossing on Oakton Street, in downtown north suburban Skokie Illinois.
These unusually shaped wooden stand up white baricades, and the grooved wooden slats beyond the sidewalk, are utilized to effectively keep pedestrians, trespassers, and unauthorized people from walking onto the very dangerous third rail electric powered right of way. Safety and Liability is important in this dangerous area. The line is powered from ground leval third rails at 600 volts DC. Extremely dangerous. These guards help keep the public where it belongs, on the sidewalk and off of the right of way.
