Old Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad coaling tower. (Gone.) Chicago Illinois USA. July 2006.
This is one of those photographs I had taken before it was too late.
Seen here, is one of two old concrete steam era coaling towers at the
Union Pacific Railroad M-19A Diesel Shop at 400 North Pulaski Road on Chicago's westside. These towers were used to load coal into the tenders of steam locomotives.
The Chicago & NorthWestern Railroad discontinued steam locomotive operatioons
altogether in 1956, but surprisingly these two towers stood here until July
25th 2006 when they too were finally demolished. I took this photo approximately
two weeks before the demolition.
