I took this photo on an October 1983 visit to the Grand Trunk Western Railroad Elsdon Yard and locomotive roundhouse. This facility, a long time neighborhood landmark and institution on Chicago's southwest side...was unfortunately in it's final week of operation. GTW and D,T & I locomotives acquired through a 1981 merger,
are seen idling on the ready tracks just west of the roundhouse at South Kedzie Avenue and West 49th Street. My last look at this facility in operation.
