Retired Burlington Northern Railroad EMD E-9 locomotive used on Chicago to Aurora commuter trains. The Illinois Railway Museum. Union Illinois USA.

Retired former Burlington Northern EMD E-9 used in Chicago to Aurora commuter train service. The Illinois Railway Museum. Union Illinois. Friday, July 3rd 2009.

On a recent family visit to the Illinois Railway Museum, I had the pleasure of seeing a remnant from My early days as an on location, lineside Chicago railfan.
Seen here in one of the museum's outdoor locomotive storage sidings, is a 1953 vintage EMD passenger locomotive that originally worked for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad on pre Amtrak passenger trains prior to 1971. After the merger that created the Burlington Northern Railroad on March 2nd 1970, this locomotive was transfered over to their commuter trains operating department.

The locomotive was built by EMD in 1953, as a model E-8 passenger service locomotive, but was rebuilt to later model E-9 standards during the early 1970's.
They operated in Chicago to Aurora commuter service until September of 1992. After it's use was no longer needed on the Metra / Burlington Northern line, it had a second career hauling commuter trains out of Baltimore Maryland over their MARC comuter rail system. Today, it has a new home and is waiting restoration at the Illinois Railway Museum.

It just seems like it was only yesterday, that I was photographing these locomotives on 35MM Film and shooting silent 8 MM home movies on location during the 1980's in the west suburban towns of Cicero, Brookfield , La Grange, Western Springs and Hindsdale Illinois.
