One northeastern United States railroad from the past that I have always found to be fascinating, was the Reading Railroad. This railroad operated Antracite coal burning steam locomotives with wide fire boxes in to the 1950's, and operated the last 4 of their T-1 Class 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotives on "Reading Rambles" steam fantrips until 1964.

Their diesel locomotive fleet was a mix of first and second generation models from EMD and Alco, as well as several first generation diesel models from Baldwin and Fairbanks Morse. Heck! They even operated electric commuter trains out of Philadelphia Pennsylvania too.

This locomotive, was photographed at Reading Pennsylvania in August of 1969. It is a second generation 1960's era EMD model SW 1001 yard switcher, wearing the Readings 1960's era yellow and green colors.

The Reading was bankrupt by the early to mid 1970's, and was rescued by the U.S Goverment in April of 1976 with five other northeastern United States railroads, to create what would become Conrail.
