One fallen flag railroad from America's past that has been a particular favorite of many railfans, was the former New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad. This railroad was known for it's nickname the "Nickle Plate Road", wich is what their equipment was lettered as.

One of the reasons that the Nickle Plate Road was so popular with railfans, is because that they were a late user of steam locomotives in daily operation, until June of 1958. The Nickle Plate Road has also set aside several steam locomotives for preservation, one of them being the currently operational NKP 2-8-4 Berkshire S 3 Class locomotive #765, wich is owned and operated on mainline fantrips by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.

This photograph is from the original Paul Eilenburger collection.
