North American and Canadian Railroads during the 1960's, were operating in an era that was refered to as the 2nd Generation of dieselized modern railroadinng.

Steam locomotives were pretty much gone for good from America's trains by the mid to late 1950's era, and the early diesel electric locomotives that had replaced them during the 1940's and 50's era, were gradually begining to show their mechanical age by the 1960's.

This photograph from the former Northern Pacific Railroad, was taken at Minneapolis Minnesota by railfan photographer Dennis Schmidt in July of 1968.

The locomotive seen here, is a General Electric model U 28C heavy roadswitcher used on freight trains.General Electric threw it's own "Hat in the ring", by entering the locomotive building market during the late 1950's. Today,  G.E has one of the the most popular and dependable line of modern high horsepower, high tech diesel electric locomotives manufactured today
