The Grand Trunk Western Railroad Elsdon Yard locomotive terminal. (Gone.) Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
I took this photograph, way back in October of 1983.
Seen here are three locomotives from the former Grand Trunk Western Railroad, one of them a former Detroit, Toledo & Ironton acquired through merger by the GTW in 1981.
These locomotives are viewed idling on the ready tracks, at the Grand Trunk Western Railroad's 1914 built Elsdon roundhouse facility at West 49th Street and South Kedzie Avenue in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.
This photograph was taken during the final week of operation at the GTW Elsdon yard and locomotive terminal. One week later, this place was abandoned and looked like a ghost town.
Today, this is the site of an outdoor retail strip mall. Part of the area behind these locomotives in the photograph, is now the right of way for the Chicago Transit Authority's orange line rapid transit to Midway Airport.
Thanks.
Eddie K.
