The Grand Trunk Western Railroad Elsdon Yard locomotive terminal at night. Chicago Illinois. April 1983. ( Gone.)
It is a quiet night on the southwest side of the city of Chicago, as the sounds
of idling diesel locomotives parked just west of the 1914 built Elsdon Roundhouse
fill the night time air. It is a chilly night in April of 1983, and the GTW Elsdon Yard, Roundhouse, The former passenger station on West 51st Street, and Terminal operations are in their last months of operations. Elsdon would officially close in October of 1983, and terminal switching as well as locomotive servicing would soon be moved to the Belt Railway of Chicago Clearing Yard in Bedford Park Illinois.
This was the begining, to an end of an era in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.
