This scene was photographed around twilight, on a hot August evening in 2008.
This is the West 68th Street Wye Junction at the Belt Railwaof Chicago's Clearing Yard near Chicago's Midway Airport. Southbound trains enter Clearing Yard here at this location, and northbound trains depart from here as well. This is a very busy Chicago southside railroad junction.
