I found this classic steam era photograph from the former Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad at My link page Fallen Flags.Org, located to the right of Your computer screen at http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/

The Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad, was one of many North American railroads that were in a hurry to retire steam locomotives and modernize with diesels after World War 2 had ended. The C & E,I unfortunately did not set aside any steam locomotives for preservation, and had fully dieselized by the early 1950's.

The C &,E,I steam locomotive shownn here, is a 2-8-0 or "Consolidation" type used on freight trains.
The narrow coal bunker behind the cab, aided in visibility during switching operations on way freights.

Railfan photographer Dennis Schmidt photographed locomotive # 908 at work.
