One place that I have childhood railfan memorys of (But unfortunately no photos from that time.)
is the Burlington Northern Clyde Yard in the west suburban village of Cicero Illinois. I took this photo on a hot summer morning in June of 1985 when the yard was run by the Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1995, the Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe RR and the Burlington Northern merged and became todays BNSF Railway.
During My childhood days, this yard belonged to the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. I can still remeber seeing red and gray locomotives with large BURLINGTON letters on the sides, or even black and gray EMD switchers with EVERYWHERE WEST and WAY OF THE ZEPHYRS on their sides. Silver C,B & Q cabooses with red stripes were very common here prior to 1970.
