Keeping our streets and alleys clean. The Chicago department of Streets and Sanitation at work. Chicago Illinois USA.September 2007.

I took this photo in September of 2007 in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood on the southside of the city. Seen here around West 34th Street just east of South Halsted Street, is a residential trash collection truck from the City of Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation. Chicago's city garbage trucks have worn this light blue paint scheme with copper colored wheels since at least 1967. Prior to the introduction and longevity of this color combination, Chicago's city garbage trucks originally were orange with maroon wheels. The snowplow attatchment on the grill and front bumper, indicates that these vechicles are occasionally pressed into snowplow service when there is heavy snow on Chicago's streets, and a possible shortage of available plowing and salting trucks during the winter months. This city crew is performing their weekly pick up in this, and several other alleys in the Bridgeport neighborhood on this lovely day.
