The 1914 built Grand Trunk Western RR Elsdon Roundhouse. ( Gone.) Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983.
A favorite landmark of many local southside Chicago railfans, and residents of Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood was the GTW Elsdon Roundhouse. This structure was located on South kedzie Avenue at what would approximately be West 49th Street.
I took this photo of the roundhouse in October of 1983, during it's last week
of operation. It would sit abandoned and forelorn, until demolition during the late 1980's. It was eventually replaced by a Jewel / Osco store around 1989 or so, and by another L shaped strip mall after Jewel closed this store around 2001.

I worked there up until the 1983 closing. I was a carknocker on 51st. That blue plywood on the roundhouse with GT on it was a custom made wall that the B&B department made to cover up the large hole that an engine went through in 1980. It even made the Tribune.
