Two Grand Trunk western Railroad transfer cabooses at the Elsdon Yard site. Chicago Illinois USA. October 1983.
Rumors had began circulating amongst the local Southside Chicago railfan community, that the Grand Trunk Western Railroad would be closing their unique steam era Elsdon Yard on West 51st Street between South St. Louis and Lawndale Avenues.
I visited the GTW Elsdon Yard site with My camera and a good pair of walking shoes one sunny and mild Indian Summer afternoon in October of 1983, and found out that those rumors were unfortunately true. The GTW Elsdon Yard on West 51st Street, and the 1914 built GTW Elsdon Roundhouse at West 49th Street and South Kedzie Avenue, were actually operating in what was their official "Last Week" of operation. Unfortunately....I do not have a record of the day and date of My October 1983 visit.
Seen here sitting on siding tracks just north of adjacent West 51st Street, are two unique Grand Trunk Western Railroad Transfer style cabooses used on switching locals.
