Wintertime on the CTA Skokie Swift rapid transit line. Friday, January 30th, 2009.
I took this photo on Friday, January 30th, 2009 in north suburban Skokie Illinois.
We are looking east on the Chicago Transit Authority's Yellow line / Skokie Swift rapid transit line from the Kostner Avenue railroad crossing. From the start of Skokie Swift operations in April of 1964 until the Autum of 2004, this ground leval segment was originally powered through overhead wires and catenary support bridges.
The Catenary support bridges are still there for now, but the line today after 2004 is 100% 3rd rail operated. Prior to the January 21st 1963 bankruptcy and abandonement, this was originally part of the Skokie Valley Mainline for the Chicago. North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad high speed electric interurban railroad.
