Wintertime on the CTA Skokie Swift line. Skokie Illinois USA. Friday, January 30th, 2009.
Friday, January 30th, 2009 was a very brightly sunlit day, with clear skies and an outside temperature of a bitterly cold 13 degrees Farenheight. I took this photo looking north , on location at the Kostner Avenue railroad crossing in north suburban Skokie Illinois. An eastbound Chicago Transit Authority "Skokie Swift" train AKA the CTA Yellow Line, is seen racing eastbound through snowy winter wonderland scenery enroute to Howard Street station in downtown Evanston Illinois.
Prior to 1963, this was the Skokie Valley Mainline of the bankrupt and abandoned Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad. This short segment was the only part of the old Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee that was preserved as an operating electric railroad. The CTA opened it in April of 1964 as the Skokie Swift line.
