Eastbound Canadian National RR switching local waiting for clearance. Hawthorne Junction. Chicago Illinois USA. March 2007.

An eastbound Canadian National switching local has just arrived from the former Illinois Central Hawthorne Yard in Cicero Illinois, and now is waiting west of the Belt Railway of Chicago crosstracks. A very lenghty and slow moving BNSF unit grain train was proceeding south over the Belt Railway of Chicago tracks, blocking the crosstracks to all east /west traffic. Just south of here on the other side of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, is Nerska Junction. Nerska Junction is where the Belt Railway of Chicago crosses the former Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe mainline. Nerska Junction was tied up at the time with a lot of east / west BNSF freight traffic, and the southbound too had to stop and wait for clearance to proceed. Lots of railroad traffic jams were experienced in Chicago on this lovely late afternoon in the early springtime.
