I took this historic photo way back in August of 1987.
An era of local neighborhood entertainment had came to an end, as the building wich housed the Marquette movie theatre and several businesses at the southeast corner of West 63rd Street and South Kedzie Avenue, was finally being demolished. It was already a good seven years or so since a motion piture of any kind was played at the Marquette theatre. Heck! There was even a wishful attempt to bring back live shows to the theatre. One was actually advertised on the marquee around 1982 or so, for the local Chicago area one hit wonder rock and roll band known as "Off Broadway", unfortunately...the show was cancelled, and the theatre sat vacant,
The businesses gradually left one by one, until the building was eventually condemed by the City of Chicago.
Notice in this 1987 photo, that those temporary construction site rental fences were not being used at this demolition site. This was definately "Old School" demolition site style before all of those liability law suits became a concern.
