New York Central Railroad freight train at Pana Illinois circa 1960's. From the internet.

I found this classic 1960's era New York Central Railroad photo on the internet recently.

Severla New York Central Railroad diesel locomotives wearing the post 1959 black with white frame and lettering color scheme complete with the NYC Cigar Band logo, are viewed passing through the interlocking tower and junction at Pana Illinois.

Not only is the former New York Central Railroad long gone, but these classic interlocking junction towers have also disappeared from the contemporary American railroad scene as well in recent years. Replaced by satalite technology and central dispatching centers.

A small handful of interlocking junction towers have made it in to museum preservation and city park displays.

Spaulding tower wich controlled the train traffic at the Milwaukee Road and Elgin, Joliet & Eastern crosstracks at Spaulding Illinois, is preserved today at The Illinois Railway Museum in Union Illinois.
Another local Chicago area railroad interlocking tower, Tower B-12, is preserved in near northwest suburban Franklin Park Illinois and is on display in a parklike setting adjacent to the Canadian Pacific ex Milwaukee Road mainline.

Thanks for sharing this photo of the tower and rail traffic in Pana. Interestingly, the tower still stands today in 2010. The tracks are long gone but the tower is a landmark here in Central Illinois.

Thanks for posting the great old shot from Pana. Interestingly, this tower still stands today in 2010. The tracks are long gone but the tower is a nice piece of rail history. The tower now sits a few blocks from the UP Pana sub.
Thanks!
